Biography

Carlos Monzón, born San Javier, Santa Fe in 1942, held the world middleweight title from November 1970 to July 1977 — 14 successful defences, the modern divisional record until Bernard Hopkins broke it. Tall, long-reaching, and methodical, he dominated the 1970s middleweight scene including two wins over Nino Benvenuti, two over Emile Griffith, and the famous 1974 victory over Bouttier in Paris. Convicted in 1989 of murdering his estranged wife Alicia Muñiz; sentenced to 11 years. Died in a car accident while on prison furlough in 1995.
