High Guard

Both gloves held just above the temples, elbows tucked tight to the ribs, chin behind the lead shoulder. The high guard is the most common defensive posture in boxing and a building block of every style — Joshua, Joe Louis, Lennox Lewis all defaulted to it under pressure. The key is the chin tuck and the elbow tightness: a high guard with elbows out is no defence at all.

Key points

  • Both gloves above the brow line, knuckles facing the opponent.
  • Elbows pinned to the ribs, never out.
  • Chin tucked behind the lead shoulder.
  • Slight crouch — the high guard is not a stand-up posture.
  • Move the gloves to track the punch trajectory; do not move the head behind the guard.

Common mistakes

  • Elbows flared — opens the ribs.
  • Hands too low — covering the jaw, not the brow.
  • Standing tall — the guard alone does not protect a high chin.
  • Holding the guard static — a moving guard catches more punches.

Drills

  1. Wall drill: stand against a wall in the high guard; partner throws punches at speed — the gloves must catch all of them.
  2. Bag drill: 3 rounds of moving around the heavy bag in high guard, blocking the swinging bag.
  3. Mirror: 5 minutes in front of a mirror checking elbow tightness every 30 seconds.
