Jab - Cross - Lead Hook

A scoring combination from 1980s boxing that targets the head, then the head, then the temple. The jab and cross go straight down the centre; the lead hook arrives at a 45° angle to the temple. The combination requires a small pivot of the lead foot on the third punch to generate hook power.

Key points

  • Cross is hidden behind the jab return.
  • Lead foot pivots inward on the hook.
  • Lead hand returns to chin between cross and hook.
  • Step out at an angle after the hook.

Common mistakes

  • Throwing the hook flat (no pivot).
  • Pausing between the cross and the hook.
  • Standing square at the end — exposed to a counter.

Drills

  1. Heavy-bag: 5 rounds of 1-2-3 with pivot exits.
  2. Mitts: catcher angles the third mitt 45° for the hook.
