Biography
Floyd Joy Mayweather Jr., born Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1977, retired with a perfect 50-0 record in 2017 — beating Rocky Marciano's mythologised 49-0 in a controversial late-career bout with UFC champion Conor McGregor. As a pure technician, Mayweather is on the pound-for-pound shortlist for the greatest fighter who ever lived: he won world titles at five different weights, finished his career with wins over Diego Corrales, Genaro Hernández, José Luis Castillo (twice), Oscar De La Hoya (split decision, 2007), Ricky Hatton (TKO 10, 2007), Juan Manuel Márquez (UD, 2009), Shane Mosley (UD, 2010), Miguel Cotto (UD, 2012), Saúl Álvarez (majority decision, 2013), and Manny Pacquiao (UD, 2015). Mayweather's signature defence — the Philly Shell shoulder roll — is taught as the textbook example. The 2015 Pacquiao fight grossed approximately $700 million in PPV revenue, making it the biggest fight in history.
