Biography
Born Los Angeles in 1973, Oscar De La Hoya won lightweight gold at Barcelona 1992 (the only American gold medallist of the games) and turned pro a month later. He won world titles in six weight classes from 130 to 160 pounds — including the 1996 WBC welterweight title from Julio César Chávez. He fought every other elite welterweight and super welterweight of the era — Pernell Whitaker, Ike Quartey, Felix Trinidad, Shane Mosley (twice), Bernard Hopkins, Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao — going 5-5 over those ten fights. The 2007 Mayweather PPV grossed $130 million; the 2008 Pacquiao PPV (stoppage 8) was his final fight. Founded Golden Boy Promotions in 2003; retired from boxing 2009.
