Roll

A rotational lower-body movement that drops the head and torso under a horizontal punch (typically a hook) and returns the body to the opposite side. The classic bob-and-weave: roll under the lead hook, end up outside the opponent's lead foot, and counter with a rear-hand body shot. Joe Frazier and Mike Tyson built signature attacks on the roll. The roll requires a deep knee bend and a U-shape trajectory under the punch — not a flat duck.

Key points

  • Deep knee bend — the legs do the work, not the back.
  • Travel in a U-shape under the punch — not flat.
  • End up on the opposite side of where you started.
  • Lead hand stays high throughout.
  • Throw a counter on the way up — every roll is paired with a return.

Common mistakes

  • Bending at the waist instead of the knees — caught by the punch.
  • Ducking flat — the chin is exposed at the bottom of the duck.
  • Standing back up without an angle change — caught by the second punch.
  • No counter on the rise.

Drills

  1. Roll-rope drill: a horizontal rope at chest height; roll under it side-to-side.
  2. Heavy-bag: 3 rounds of bob-weave under imaginary hooks + counter body shot.
  3. Partner drill: partner throws slow lead hooks at half-speed; you roll and counter to the body.
