Slide Step

Movement in any cardinal direction without crossing the feet. The lead foot moves first if going forward or laterally to the lead side; the rear foot moves first if going backward or laterally to the rear side. The other foot then follows, maintaining stance width and orientation. This is the foundation of all in-fight movement.

Key points

  • Lead foot moves first when advancing or stepping lead-side.
  • Rear foot moves first when retreating or stepping rear-side.
  • Maintain stance width — the rear foot must travel the same distance as the lead foot.
  • Never cross the feet.
  • Slide on the balls of the feet — heels off the ground.

Common mistakes

  • Crossing the feet — destroys balance and exposes to a counter.
  • Bouncing instead of sliding — visible to the opponent and wastes energy.
  • Stepping with one foot only — the second foot must catch up immediately.
  • Stepping on the heels — slows recovery.

Drills

  1. Box pattern: stand inside a 3-foot square; slide to each corner, 5 times each, without crossing feet.
  2. Mirror slide: face a mirror, slide laterally for 1 round, focused on stance width.
  3. Slide-and-jab: every slide ends with a jab from the new position.
