In-and-Out

The foundational range-management movement in boxing. Step forward to enter punching range, throw a punch, step backward to exit. Done at speed and in good rhythm, in-and-out is the basis of every outboxer's style. Larry Holmes built a 48-fight unbeaten streak almost entirely on the jab-and-step-out.

Key points

  • Lead foot moves first when stepping in; rear foot first when stepping out.
  • The IN-step is short — half a step is usually enough.
  • The OUT-step happens AS the punch is retracting, not after.
  • Maintain stance width in both directions.
  • Heels off the floor — bounce, do not stomp.

Common mistakes

  • Stepping in too far — you cross into the opponent's short-range strike zone.
  • Stepping out after the punch has fully returned — too slow, you get countered.
  • Lifting the lead foot off the floor on the way in.
  • Stepping out straight back — predictable; mix with lateral exits.

Drills

  1. Heavy-bag: 5 rounds of jab + step-out, alternating lateral and backward exits.
  2. Partner drill: partner steps forward; you step out at the exact moment.
  3. Tape-line shuttle: tape two lines 5 feet apart; in-and-out between them, 100 reps per round.
